Magnet Engineer - Experimental Focus
We are looking for a magnet engineer to join the Magnets and Cryogenics team. The ideal candidate has a problem-solving mindset and exceptional creativity. We are especially interested in experimental skills as in this role you will assembly and test the high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet systems, together with their support structures and electric feeders.
Responsibilities
Manufacturing/Assembly
- Provide support to the Magnet Design & Modeling team on a daily basis:
- in taking account of magnet manufacturing and assembly constraints
- to guarentee the good understanding of the technical requirements and ensure that they are taken into account in the construction stages
- Participate to the selection of the subcontractors and monitor cost and schedule with project management officers
- Supervise and monitor the in-house or outsourced construction of magnet components, support structures, feeders and cooling/instrumentation
- Develop and test novel HTS magnet manufacturing processes (HTS joints, windings, insulation, protection, powering etc…), and scale them up while maximizing Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Inspectability (RAMI).
- Carry out and/or supervise the assembly and integration in the machine
- Define the experimental setups & procedures to test and validate HTS magnet systems performance and characteristics (mechanical/electrical/vacuum/cryogenics, etc.).
- Design, build, improve, and analyse data from test rigs for the charaterization of HTS material and magnet systems. (measurements of critical current, time constants, magnetic field, temperature, stress, electrical dynamics, etc…).
- Carry out and/or supervise the tests execution and results assessessment.
Scientific outcome
- Prepare scientific reports (presentations, posters, etc.) and represent RF to scientific conferences and workshops
- Participate in the writing of patents and scientific papers
- Put forward proposals for collaborations and grants
- Remain on the lookout for any scientific developments in his/her field of expertise
- May supervise trainees or co-supervise PhD students
Support of other teams
- Occasionally assist the Magnet Design & Modeling team if they have a peak in workload in the areas of design and modeling and develop this spirit of mutual support.
Requirements
Don't hesitate to apply even if you don't match all the requirements. Superheroes don't exist, but people with passion and talent do.
Education and professional experience
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical, electro-mechanical engineering, physics, or related field.
- Previous experience in the superconductor/magnet industry or high-tech laboratories is a plus.
- 5+ years of experience in magnet engineering, experimentation, and analysis.
- 3+ years of experience in mechanical design and preparation of technical specifications.
Languages
- Fluent in English (C1)
Bonus (skills that are appreciated but not mandatory)
- Experience with SolidWorks or ANSYS or COMSOL or other computational software
- Project management from design to assembly
- Previous experience in follow-up (junior) of design activities, manufacturing contracts and assembly, preferably on superconducting magnet design and construction
- French (B1 or higher)
