HTS Magnet Engineer
We are looking for a magnet engineer to join the Magnets, Vacuum and Cryogenics team. The ideal candidate has a problem-solving mindset and exceptional creativity. We are especially interested in design and experimental skills. The successful candidate will develop the detailed design and coordinates the R&D, construction, testing and assembly of the high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet systems, together with their support structures and electric feeders.
Responsibilities
Design
- Develop technical solutions for the design of the windings, joints, current leads and cooling systems of innovative HTS coils. Define materials and interfaces to neighbouring components, develop instrumentation requirements, etc.
- Discuss simulations with the modeling and engineering team
- Define R&D acitivities (mock-ups, prototypes, qualifications tests) to validate the project, bearing in mind fabrication and control technicques.
- Write technical specification and quality assurance documents in accordance to RF guidelines.
Measurement and Analysis
- Perform and analyze magnetic field measurements on HTS magnets using Hall probes, rotating coils, pickup coils, and other advanced tools (e.g., SQUID, NMR) to ensure alignment with design specifications
- Analyze the electromagnetic behavior, AC losses and quench propagation in the HTS magnet system and its electrical feeders/joints in normal operational and fault conditions.
- Analyze the thermo-mechanical behavior of the magnet system and its support structures/feeders under operational conditions.
Manufacturing/Assembly
- Supervise and monitor the in-house or outsourced construction of magnet components, support structures, feeders and cooling/instrumentation, as well as their their assembly and integration in the machine.
- Participate to the selection of subcontractors, monitoring cost and schedule in collaboration with project management officers.
Testing
- Develop test benches for critical current measurements, HTS joints resistance measurements, etc…
- Define the testing conditions and procedures (mechanical / electrical / vacuum / cryogenics, etc.) of the magnets and their current leads/cooling systems.
- Execute and/or supervise internal and external magnet tests. Assess test results.
Requirements
Do not hesitate to apply if you don’t meet all the requirements. Superheroes don’t exist, but people with talent and passion do!
Education and professional experience
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical, electro-mechanical engineering, physics, or related field.
- Previous experience in the superconductor/magnet industry or high-tech laboratories is a plus
- 3+ years of experience in magnet engineering and/or analysis and/or construction.
- 1+ years of experience in mechanical design and preparation of technical specifications.
Languages
- Fluent in English (C1)
Bonus
- Experience with SolidWorks or ANSYS or COMSOL or other computational software
- Project management from design to assembly
- Previous experience in follow-up (junior) of design activities, manufacturing contracts and assembly, preferably on superconducting magnet design and construction
