We are looking for a Group leader of the team responsible for substrate polishing and surface preparation to ensure the highest quality standards for thin-film deposition processes in the development of high-temperature superconductors (HTS) by supervising the substrate preparation workflow, from raw material assessment to final polishing , cleaning, conditioning and other treatments.

Responsibilities

Polishing & Surface Preparation Activities

• Manage the definition, development and implementation of technical solutions for substrate polishing and surface preparation to meet the specifications of process engineers
• Select and optimize polishing technologies to achieve the required surface roughness and defect control
• Coordinate the detailed design of the polishing machine(s)
• Commission, maintain, and troubleshoot polishing and surface preparation equipment
• Implement surface preparation and cleaning processes to ensure surface quality before thin-film deposition overseeing ultrasonic cleaning and rinsing for the removal of contaminants to prepare substrates for deposition
• Work closely with the characterization team to implement a quality control system of raw materials and polished materials by selecting the best characterization methods (e.g., atomic force microscopy (AFM), profilometry, optical techniques) to verify surface roughness, cleanliness, and crystallinity; ensure that the characterization team can meet the needs of the polishing team on time during operations.

Scientific outcome

• Lead and coordinate scientific record keeping on paper, in shared, experimental laboratory notebooks. Guarantee that they are up-to-date, detailed, well-organized and understandable to internal users and external patent officers, grant reviewers, peer-reviewers of journal manuscripts
• Coordinate the writing, review and approval of patents and scientific papers
• Prepare scientific reports (presentations, posters, etc.) and represent Renaissance Fusion to scientific conferences and workshops
• Remain on the lookout for any scientific developments in your field of expertise

Requirements

Education and professional experience

• PhD or master’s degree + equivalent experience in material engineering or related field
• 8+ years of experience in polishing substrate preparation in industries such as semiconductors, optical coatings, aero-space, photovoltaics, LED and OLED screens, MEMS, automotive coatings
• 3+ years of experience as a technical leader/coordinator and/or project management
• Previous experience in a start-up is a plus

Languages

• Fluent in English (C1/C2)
• Knowledge (B1 or higher) of French is a plus

Technical skills

• Polishing meter-wide surfaces techniques and handling
• Operating laser for making and cutting the substrate
• Prototyping and scaling up to volume production innovative polishing processes
• Project management from design to assembly
• Contract management
• Writing specifications and standard operation documents

Other

• Willingness to travel to conferences
